Obituary

Mr. and Mrs. A. Sykes received a message on the 25th that their eldest son, Private Gordon Sykes, of the 76th Battalion, had met his death on the Somme front in France. General regret was expressed by the whole community and deep sympathy for the bereaved family. The young man was an industrious and highly respected fellow, and had a good large heart. He followed the calling of a sailor and was a good seaman, but then the call came he enlisted in the 177th Battalion, and when the call came for volunteers for the 76th Battalion to go overseas he was one of the number that answered the request and nobly did his duty for King and Country and made the supreme sacrifice. Their other son, Malcolm, was honourably discharged from the 177th Battalion, medically unfit through an attack of typhoid fever he had a short time before he enlisted.
