Son of George Herrick Duggan and Mildred Scarth Stevensen Duggan, of 120 McTavish St., Montreal. Major Duggan took his men "over the top" at 6:10 a.m. 30 October 1917; after advancing about 250 yards, Major Duggan was hit by a shell burst which gravely wounded him in the abdomen and legs. Major Duggan lay between two shell holes for about 2 hours, when, according to eyewitness accounts he was killed by another burst of shrapnel. This information was provided by Sgt. Horace Brooks of the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles and Sgt. McConnell of the 60th battalion, also with the 5th C.M.R. at the time. (J.G.)

Mentioned in the 23 July 1917 entry of the 5th CMR War Diary as returning and taking command of "A" Company.

Promoted to Temporary Captain, according to the 27 August 1917 5th CMR War Diary.

Maj. Duggan wrote a report on a patrol sent out during the battle of Passchendaele, recorded in the War Diary here - 29 October 1917.

Narrative of Operations 29-31 October 1917:

7.35 am
Following report received by runner from Advance Bn. H.Qs.

6:37 a.m. Three white lights reported from "C" Coy.
6.40 a.m. Enemy retiring in disorder on front of ARTISTS.
6.47 a.m. "A" Coy. reported by observers to be out of touch with "C" Coy. and to be on the right of WOODLAND PLANTATION. Observers report that they are engaged in hand-to-hand fighting with the enemy and to be forcing him back, at the same time closing up with "C" Coy. "D" Coy. leaves trench.
6.55 a.m. Observers report that "A" Coy. has reached Intermediate, but it is not definite as yet. "A" Coy. appears to be connected up with "C" Coy. but the smoke makes it very difficult to observe.
7.04 a.m. Enemy is retiring over hill at extreme rear in large parties.
Major DUGGAN, Lieut. MILLAR and Lieut. DUNNING are reported wounded, the last seriously. Lieut. HALL is carring on with "A" Coy.

7.10 a.m.(Sgd.) W. J. Atherton
