As recorded on George's Attestation Papers, he enlisted in Penetanguishene on the 3rd of March, 1916. He gave his birth date as April 24, 1897, making him 19 years old. He appears to have lied about his age as his actual age was 17 years old. He enlisted with the 177th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Infantry then served in Belgium with the 4th Battalion, CEF with service number 644704. He was killed in the third battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) on November 7, 1917 at the age of 18. He has no know grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial, Belgium panel 18, 24, 30. He is commemorated on page 232 of the
Book of Remembrance-First World War, in the Parliament Buildings of Canada.
His name is also engraved on the war memorial in Penetanguishene, Ontario.
