From John Cowie
Frederick John Hanson – a one time resident of Tickhill and brother in law of Norman Fullwood (Collector) of St Mary’s Road, Tickhill, has been reported missing in action after the assault on Hill 60 in the Ypres salient, France. This was the same action which claimed the life of Captain Edward Wilberforce Leather.
He was for some time the genial and capable secretary of the Tickhill Choral Society. He also sang in the church choir and on emigrating to Canada joined the choir of St John’s Church in Port Arthur, Ontario. Port Arthur is now a district of the city of Thunder Bay in northern Ontario.
The very first month of the war saw him on his way overseas with the first Canadian contingent. For more than a year nothing had been heard of him, but now the Canadian War Office declared him to be Presumed killed. To confirm this sad assumption newspaper reports in Ontario state that a pal of his "saw him killed on 25 April 1915 – prior to himself being taken prisoner".
A memorial service was held in memory of Private Hanson and six other soldiers in St John’s Church, Port Arthur May 1915. on 28
He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panels 24,26, 28 and 30.
