In the war diary of the 46th battalion he was recommended for a Victoria Cross during the battle in which he died. This is on p.86 of the war diary for October 1917. He saw that an LAR post was out and he rushed across the battlefield to it, repaired the gun and the fired at the oncoming counter attack. The gun again failed and he again repaired it, again fighting off the counter attack. He then had to retreat and at this point carrying the gun he was killed by the Germans counter attacking.
