Son of Dr. James Snodgrass Mathews and Mary Anne Mathews (nee Williams). In 1911, David, along with his mother, sister and brother immigrated to Winnipeg from Machynlleth, Wales.

At the time of enlistment, David was serving with the Active Militia of the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada, then was transferred to the 43rd Cameron Highlanders of Canada.
