Camouflet - underground explosion that does not reach the surface, creating a cavity filled with gas and smoke. If it reached the surface, it would create a crater.

Although he died during the time of the Vimy offensive, he was working at Mount Sorrel in Belgium, so was not killed at Vimy Ridge.
