R.T. Elliott, K.C., of Victoria, B.C., was the founder of Elliott’s Horse - a 'freelance' cavalry unit, composed almost entirely of seasoned veterans, raised in Victoria in the early days of the Great War [1914].

Elliott's Horse was composed of 5 officers and 78 men. The unit departed Victoria on Oct. 23 for Vancouver, then travelled across Canada by train to Montreal, arriving Oct. 29, where they boarded SS Letitia on Oct. 31 bound for Glasgow, Scotland. Arriving there Nov. 9 they then travelled to London. On Nov. 17 the unit entrained for Salisbury Plain where they were welcomed by the Royal Canadian Dragoons and Lord Strathcona's Horse.

15th Jan 1915 transferred to R.C.D., September 1917 transferred to 3 Coy, 7th Battalion.
