Beginning at 7 a.m., the Germans poured a heavy artillery barrage onto the position continuing for seven hours. At. 2 p.m., the Germans exploded four large mines under the Canadian trenches. One hundred sixty eight men of the 28th were killed outright by the explosions. German infantry then attacked five times being driven back each time by determined resistance.
