Son of the Hon. George Barnard Baker, K.C. (member of the Senate of Canada) and Jane Percival Baker (nee Cowan)
Lt.-Col. G. H. Baker was a member of the House of Commons, Canada. Commanding Officer of the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles. He was the M.P. for Brome County and the first and only member of Parliament to be killed in action overseas during the Great War. His sacrifice so impressed the sitting members of Parliament that they ordered a memorial to his honour erected in the main lobby of the House of Commons, unveiled at the opening session of Parliament in 1924.

According to the 5th CMR War Diary (November 1917), The Commanding Officer and Adjutant visited the grave of Lt.-Col. Baker and Major Pilcher at Poperinghe on November 19th, noting that the graves had been well kept.
