Son of Alexander Rutledge and Ada Rutledge, of 140, Preston St., Halifax, Nova Scotia. Formerly of 63rd Halifax Rifles (Canadian Militia). Friend of Captain William John Alexander Stewart, 488785.

His brother James Edward Rutledge also served as a Lieutenant in the CEF.

[Private Army Canadian Infantry 63rd Regiment, Halifax Rifles Originally joined the Halifax Rifles militia regiment in 1907. Mobilized with this regiment at Halifax. Served as part of the Halifax Garrison.
Lieutenant Army Canadian Machine Gun Corps Canadian Machine Gun Company He was taken on strength with the CMGC Training Depot at Crowborough but remained attached to the 11th Brigade Machine Gun Company until September 09. Attached to the Canadian Military School for officer's training on December 01. On February 14, 1917 he was commissioned as a Lieutenant, (ref: London Gazette 29976). On April 21 he was attached to the Canadian Machine Gun Corps Reinforcing Depot and proceeded to France.
