From the War Diary for No. 4 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station the day John died, 18 April 1918: "Cold. Occasional flurries of rain and snow. Admitted in morning and again in evening. Two evacuations. Admitted 305. Evacuated 200. Structure of posts and tarpaulins being erected to shelter patients preparatory to operation. Six surgical teams worked at one time during afternoon and evening."
