Original Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion from September 23, 1914 to January 17, 1916. Commander of the 9th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Division at Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. Prior to the war he commanded the 44th Lincoln and Welland Regiment. Commander of Military District No. 7 after the war until 1930 when he retired. Honorary Colonel of the Carleton and York Regiment.
