Lt.-Col. W. E. S. Knowles was a prominent personality in Dundas, Ontario. He was active in the 77th Wentworth Regiment and indicated on his military attestation that he had been with this unit since November 1889.

Pre-war photographs of the Dundas Armouries and the 77th Regiment appeared in Picturesque Dundas (edited by A. F. Pirie).

In late 1914 he received a number of letters from 77th men at Valcartier and later at Salisbury Plain. The Dundas Star newspaper printed these letters in their weekly publication to provide the public with some information about the activities of the Dundas men at war.

The Dundas Star is held on microfilm at the Hamilton Public Library.

He became the Commanding Officer of the 129th Battalion in December 1915, and before the war, he had been the Mayor of Dundas Ontario.

He died in 1931
