March 25, 1891 - November 27, 1970In Ireland he was a member of the North Irish Horse from 1909-1911. Left Belfast Jul.21,1911, sailed on SS Lake Champlain. Joined the Governor Generals Body Guard, 1911-1914. Worked with T.Eaton Co. until Aug.1914 when he enlisted with the Princess Pats, took train to Ottawa. Was transferred Aug.20 to 1st Battery, 1st Brigade, 1st Division, CFA. At end of Aug. took train to Valcartier Camp, Quebec. Sept.23 travelled to quay at Quebec City to begin loading horses and guns onto the S.S.Saxonia then to move down to Gaspe Bay on Sept 25. Oct.17 arrived in Plymouth. Oct.18 moved to Salisbury Plains. Feb.7 sailed for France aboard the African Prince, through the Bay of Biscay to St. Nezere, Feb.10, 1915. The battery was moved to St. Julien, Apr.19, 1915 then moved to Poperinge. Moved on to Armentiers, Festubert. La Basse, Givenchy, by June moved to Messines, to Hill 63 until Christmas. March 1916 moved to Ypres Salient, St. Omar, Somme, Thiepval, Poziers, Courcelette, Chamblain Chatlain. Jan.1917 to Bully Grenade, Vimy, the Nine Elms, Petit Vimy, and was fully engaged in fighting until Aug.17, 1917 when he was badly gassed at Loos, lost his sight for a time and suffered lung damage which bothered him the rest of his life. He had served in England, France and Belgium. He was discharged Mar.17, 1919 and was returned to Canada aboard the SS Canada. ’Paddy’, as he was known, rejoined the GGBG from 1919-1934. Altogether he had given 25 years to the military, 3 years North Irish Horse, 4 1/2 years First Battery CFA, 17 1/2 years with the GGBG. Jack remained a Life Member of the Originals Club.
