From the war diary and the CWGC description of Nine Elms British Cemetery it can be assumed that this man died as a result of wounds received in the Battle for Passchedaele as the battalion were involved in an operation in that area on 28th October 1917. The cemetery was used for burials from the 3rd Australian and 44th clearing stations in September to December 1917 which had been moved to Poperinghe in preparation for the 3rd Battle of Ypres.
