This man stated that he had previously served one year with the Imperial Army and nine months with the Royal Canadian Regiment. The enlistment on October 30, 1915 was with the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders - #222908) but was transferred to the No. 2 Construction Battalion as a Lieutenant.

The No. 2 Construction Battalion (an all Black battalion) served in France with the majority of the men being assigned to the No. 5 Canadian Forestry Corps (Jura Group).
