He was commissioned into the Kings Royal Rifle Corps on the 25th April 1917 assigned to the 16th Battalion arriving at their depot in France on the 26th of July of the same year. He was wounded at least once hospitalized on the 24th of February 1918 and returning to the battalion on the 21st April. Second Lieutenant Surry was killed in action on the morning of the 12th October 1918 while serving with D Company attempting to secure the heights above Neuvilly, France. He is commemorated on the Vis en Artois Memorial.
