Toronto Star - Dec. 24, 1917:
CANADIAN VETERAN IS APPOINTED.
Vancouver, B.C. -- To be mentioned in despatches seven times, to be awarded the D.S.O., and to win promotion from the rank of lieutenant to that of major, after serving 27 months in France, and to be chosen from all the returned officers in Canada to be military commandant of the Carnegie Technical Institute of Military Training at Pittsburg, is the record of Major H. Lyle, who has returned here from France.
Vancouver Daily Sun - "Teach Shock Tactics to American Officers / Major Lyle of the Princess Patricia's Going to Important Military Training Camp at Pittsburg"" published 26 December 1917, pg. 10. According to this report, Lyle served 27 months in France. He had recently been chosen from the returned officers in Canada, to be military commandant of the Carnegie Technical Institute of Military Trianing at Pittsburg. The report also notes that Major Lyle had served with Pancho Villa's forces in Mexico before he left to volunteer with the P.P.C.L.I. He was wounded in the leg at St. Eloi in March 1915, and later went as second in command for the 2nd Battalion where it was said he had invented the first tench raid.
I have considerable information on this officer as he is my great grandfather if you are so inclined. Much of my information comes from original Manitoba Free Press, Pittsburgh Leader and The Tartan of the Carnegie Military Institute.
He died May 22 1931 in Beaver Lodge Alta at age 52.
