It was reported in the Toronto Star on August 18th, 1917 (see attached image) that Nursing Sister Emma Pense of Kingston, Ontario, was "one of the first of the Canadian military nurses to see service at the front, has been invested by the King with the Order of the Royal Red Cross, the second Canadian to receive the honour."
