NS Grindlay returned to Canada in early 1919 after serving four years. Her brother, Bdr. W. H. Grindlay, served three years overseas with service at Vimy Ridge among other engagements. A sister, Helen Grindlay, served overseas as a V.A.D.
According to an article published in the Toronto Star on April 1st, 1919 (accompanying the attached photo), brother and sister had sailed home on separate ships from England, and were interviewed at the home of their mother at 544 Huron St. in Toronto.
NS Grindlay was first placed in 1915 at 4th Canadian General Hospital. Later she went on to France and worked at Etaples and Rouen. She was then recalled at sent by hospital ship with 75 other nurses to Salonika. The ship picked up wounded from the peninsula at Suvla Bay - "We picked up 600 men in the most frightful condition, some mortally wounded and others suffering from malaria and emaciated from the lack of proper nourishment."
At Salonika NS Grindlay was stationed five miles behind the lines for 18 months.
Finally, upon returning to England, Grindlay was stationed at Westcliffe Hospital.
