A notice appeared regarding the award of the Royal Red Cross (Second Class) to a Hilda MacDonald.
(Chronicle Herald - Friday 05 January 1990 - Page C5) Hilda MacDonald dies at age 104 - MacDonald, Hilda Havergall - 104, Wolfville, died Thursday in Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital, Wolfville. Born in Glendyer, Inverness County, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Annabel (Cameron) MacDonald. She received her nursing training at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in 1910. In 1914, she went overseas with 24 nurses and was awarded a Royal Red Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace. After the war, she returned to Canada and worked for four years in Saskatchewan before accepting a position with the Nova Scotia Teachers College, where she worked for 20 years. Many of her retirement years were spent in Wolfville and her summer cottage in Glendyer. The body has been cremated. A grave-side service will be held at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery, Glendyer. Donations may be made to Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital.
