RESEARCH INFORMATION
Lt. James Watson Lockhart initially enlisted in the Infantry - his attestation is marked as for the 19th Battalion. He left for England in December 1915 and joined the R.F.C. Employed for seven months in "Zepp strafing" in England, he moved on to France in October 1916 as squadron photographic officer.
At Vimy Ridge in April 1917 he set out with his observer to take photographs over the German lines when they were spotted by the enemy. He was wounded during the ensuing engagement with two enemy Albatross. A bullet hit his lower leg, however. he was able to fly back to safety.
He was treated at Rouen Hospital, and later at 17 Park Lane by Dr. Shield, a famous Australian surgeon. He lost his left leg.
Lockhart was a graduate of St. Andrew's College in Toronto. His ancestors were old United Empire Loyalists.
