Oct 6, 1915, 5 - Photo, John Gibson Anderson, of Victoria, promoted. Received his commission after service on firing line in North France with 1st Canadian Contingent for 8 months. Aged 28, his mother and family are residents of Victoria. He was educated here, and for a time, taught school at Pender Island. McGill to study electrical science. He entered 14th Dragoons at Grouard, AB, and went to front as Pte, he has earned his recognition by sheer worth under the most trying conditions. Anderson, who left as Pte, 14th AB Dragoons when war began, was given commission a short time ago, was instructed to make a reconnaissance of German positions before 5th Battalion, CEF on night of Oct 8. With Sapper Whyte they crept along an old British ‘sap’ and eventually found themselves in one of the German’s making. They now were in enemy territory and moved ahead slowly and noiselessly. Suddenly they sighted 2 Germans, who were sitting with their rifles by their sides and bombs at their feet. The Germans saw them at the same instant...

Sep 7, 1916, 5 - Lt Harold Whyte, of Victoria, WIA, was surveyor here prior to going overseas. Left VI last Jun with 102nd Bn, WIA less than 3 weeks of reaching trenches. Aged 27, graduate of McGill, worked with Gore & McGregor. Married Miss Edna Green, Dec 1915. He is stepson of late Mr D R Irvine, both his parents are dead, but there are 2 relatives well known on the Island, namely, Mr A A Green, who left with 88th Bn, and Frank Green, Cowichan. His wife is resident of Victoria.
